CONCUR facilitated the NOAA Fisheries West Coast Swordfish Fisheries Meeting held May 11-12, 2015 in La Jolla, CA. This meeting was attended by 50 state and federal agency fisheries managers, commercial fishermen, seafood suppliers, U.S. fisheries advocates, conservation NGOs, and academics. Participants discussed U.S. West Coast swordfish fisheries and explored complementary strategies to optimize fishing for highly migratory species, reduce bycatch and sustainably manage the fisheries. Small group discussions examined the current state of swordfish fisheries, possible gear and operational changes, strategies to increase demand for local and sustainable swordfish, and exploring ways to optimize highly migratory species fishing off the West Coast while further reducing bycatch.
